Barb Wilkie's EHN Website
Last updated 2008

EHN Board President Barb Wilkie was very ill from chemically-induced kidney disease for several years. She passed away May 31, 2011. EHN presents this site both as a tribute and as valuable information. Many links and references will be out of date but Barb's research holds up over time. We will be transferring the site page by page, with updated details, to EHN's main site. If you would like to reach an EHN staff person, please contact us directly.

Ecology House, 375 Catalina Blvd, San Rafael
(Home to our fall - winter - spring meetings;
summer meetings held in Bay Area parks as announced.)

Bring a tasty dish for our organic potluck afterwards so we can hang out & munch a bunch. I look forward to seeing everyone.

Until wise fools and mere mortals gather to speak of
tomatoes, medicine, & life . . . - Louise

Please attend scent free.
We are guests of Ecology House.

Do not wear any makeup, perfume, cologne, aftershave, nail polish, talcum powder, hairspray or gel, scented shampoo or conditioner, scented detergen or fabric softener on your clothes, or dry cleaned clothes, or shoes with shoe polish.

Remember, just as bodies, hair and clothing pick up the chemicals of tobacco smoke and its synthetic flavors, they most certainly pick up the petrochemicals used to make synthetic scents. Always be mindful of your surroundings and the products you use, but be especially careful BEFORE coming to EHN meetings.
Thank you. -- barb

Synthetic Scents can contain from 70 to 100% Aroma Chemicals

If you believe that:
1) fragrances should be tested for safety upon inhalation,
absorpition, and for adverse effects to non-users BEFORE marketing, and
2) all fragrances not substantiated for safety should be labeled with
the FDA's prescribed warning message, then
3) write to the FDA; of course, the FDA has made it as difficult as possible for you to complain about adverse reactions to fragrances and flavors. Alas. Alack.

Want to do SOMEthing in addition to writing to the FDA about Citizens' Petition, 99P-1340?

SNIFF (Safe Notification and Information for Fragrances Act)
SNIFF is the brain child of Lynn Lawson, who met and worked with her representative, Jan Schakowsky (D IL). February 2003: We are awaiting word that The Honorable Jan Schakowsky has re-introduced her bill into Congress. Maybe gains will be made with the new administration now in office. -- barb

SNIFF seeks correct labeling on fragrances released to market, to wit:

"To amend the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act to require that fragrances containing known toxic substances or allergens be labeled accordingly."
